CLEANING AND REGENERATING LAKES

ST. PETERSBURG, FL

Cleaning and Regenerating Lakes

For the Benefit of Community and Environment

Stewards of Our Urban Lakes combines environmental science with the grit of everyday citizens to protect and improve Crescent Lake and other St. Petersburg lakes. We remove invasive plant species, plant beneficial native plants, create habitat for wildlife, and remove trash from lakes and surrounding watersheds.

Helping the Wildlife

By removing invasive plant species and planting beneficial native plants, we create a better habitat for wildlife where they can thrive. The trash from lakes and surrounding watersheds inhibit the birds and larger animals from their home and can even put their health in danger. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we are now seeing our lake teeming with new life!

Volunteer Statistics in 2021

  • 1,043 volunteer-hours spent with debris clean-up, invasive plant removal, and plant installation.

  • 5,241 lbs of debris collected.

  • 62,140 lbs of invasive plants removed from the lake.

  • 278 plants installed in lake marshes.

About Us

SoUL’s purpose is to demonstrate and educate the public on the proven benefits of guiding volunteers on the enhancement and improvement of urban lakes. These benefits include restored wetland habitat, reduced litter and trash, enhanced interest in lake environmental quality, and increased educational opportunities. Building on our long-term experience of restoring Crescent Lake in St. Petersburg, we will share successful examples and useful guidance on nature-based methods and public outreach for the creation and enhancement of lake vegetation and managing water quality.

“I’ve never seen a more strong, dedicated team than that of SoUL.”

— John S.
